Homeless and Hopeful

We shot CURB APPEAL on Saturday. It was a perfect day for shooting this film. Yes, it was cold, but the weather was ideal for capturing the essence of the surreal brutality of homelessness.

So, what happened?

I barked out orders, Jesse framed the shots and Kricket made sure everyone was safe. If you are wondering what the actors did, I'll tell you. They acted.

The result of these combined efforts will be a three minute film about a homeless man waxing poetic about a Realtor.

The cast and crew:

Mark Kann as JOE, THE HOMELESS VET

Richard Briggs as REALTOR

Jesse Kuntz and Tina Cuppini as THE UPWARDLY MOBILE COUPLE

The PASSERSBY include Naomi Baumgart, Tammy Reed, Kobe Reed, Jocelyn Kuntz and Sam Kuntz.

THE HOMELESS include Susan Hasse, Tally Street and Fern Kuntz.

The cast was great and good natured about being in nature. It is exciting to collaborate with people who are willing to sacrifice time and comfort for the sake of art.

Something "funny" happened that I want to tell you. Tally Street played the HOMELESS TEENAGE MOTHER. She was propped up against a building sort of snuggled underneath a blanket holding a "baby." The "baby" at that time was actually just a prop.

Tally was in character when a red van full of women pulled up. I don't know the name of their organization, but they were people who go around and tend to the homeless. They didn't realize we were merely shooting a film. They thought Tally WAS a homeless teenage mother with a baby!

They actually tried to take her and the baby somewhere safe and warm.

I explained to them we were just shooting a movie and they went on their way.

This shoot is just another of the many reasons I am so proud of my city.
